Soluble fiber – attracts and dissolves in water, turning into a gel-like substance that helps to regulate the rate of digestion and, in turn, helps with satiety (feeling “satisfied” or appropriately full after a meal). Soluble fiber is very hard to obtain through the diet.
The basis of most plant-based products. Insoluble means that it does not dissolve in water, but rather stays intact throughout the digestive system. This type of fiber is considered gut-healthy, because it adds bulk to the diet and helps support healthy bowel function.
This soluble fiber is an arabinogalactan from the acacia tree. It is a prebiotic, as it supports the growth of friendly bacteria, bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, while it inhibits clostridium.
This fiber is excellent for its antioxidant abilities, 39 ORAC units/g, and its ability to lower glucose and insulin.
This insoluble fiber has an even more impressive ORAC value of 197, mostly due to its content of phenolics and anthocyanins.
This insoluble fiber has a very high water binding ability (18 times its weight) and may improve diarrhea.
Guar gum greatly reduces glycemic load of a meal. Adding a soluble fiber to a meal with significant carbohydrate content can lower the plasma glucose response for up to three hours after the meal.
